Genetics

The genes and DNA of a dog are essentially the blue print used to create the next generation of puppies. A general comprehension of genetics is key to maximizing reproductive success.

Chihuahuas come in two coat varieties, smooth and long. The inheritance of the genes responsible for which coat will be expressed can be interpreted using a simple punit square. The Smooth Coat is the dominant gene in the chihuahua and will mask the Long Coat gene in a heterozygous animal. The Long Coat gene is homozygous recessive; the animal must be homozygous (LL) in order for the gene to be expressed.

Terms Defined

    1. Geneotype: The Genetic make up of that animal
    2. Phenotype: The way an animal appears regardless of its genotype
    3. Heterozygous: Two Different Alleles (i.e. SL)
    4. Homozygous: Having the Same Alleles (i.e. LL)
